Wi-Fi (pronounced /ˈwaɪfaɪ/) is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance that manufacturers may use to brand certified products that belong to a class of wireless local area network (WLAN) devices based on the IEEE 802.11 standards, which is by far the most widespread WLAN class today. Because of the close relationship with its underlying standards, the term Wi-Fi is often used as a synonym for IEEE 802.11 technology.[1][2]
The Wi-Fi Alliance, a global association of companies, promotes WLAN technology and certifies products if they conform to certain standards of interoperability. Not every IEEE 802.11-compliant device is submitted for certification to the Wi-Fi Alliance, sometimes because of costs associated with the certification process. The lack of the Wi-Fi logo does not necessarily imply a device is incompatible with Wi-Fi devices.

It is maintained by the United States government and is freely accessible by anyone with a GPS receiver.
GPS was created and realized by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and was originally run with 24 satellites. It was established in 1973 to overcome the limitations of previous navigation systems.

Current PDAs often have the ability to connect to the Internet. A PDA has an electronic visual display, enabling it to include a web browser, but some newer models also have audio capabilities, enabling them to be used as mobile phones or portable media players. Many PDAs can access the Internet, intranets or extranets via Wi-Fi or Wireless Wide Area Networks. Many PDAs employ touchscreen technology.

    1. Wi-Fi
What is Wi-Fi? Can you use Wi-Fi with any computer anyplace? Explain about hotspots. Where is your nearest hotspot? List the sites you used.

WIFI, a local area network that uses high frequency radio signals to transmit and receive data over distances of a few hundred feet; uses ethernet protocol.
Network adapters wirelessly connect your computer to your wireless router. If you have a newer computer you may already have wireless capabilities built in. If this is the case, then you will not need a wireless network adapter. If you need to purchase an adapter for a desktop computer, buy a USB wireless network adapter. If you have a laptop, buy a PC card-based network adapter. Make sure that you have one adapter for every computer on your network.
A hotspot is a site that offers Internet access over a wireless local area network through the use of a router connected to a link to an Internet service provider. Hotspots typically use Wi-Fi technology for the wireless network.
Hotspots may be found in coffee shops and various other public establishments.

    2. GPS
What is GPS? Name two situations where GPS would be useful. List the sites you used.

GPS stands for the Global Positioning System. It refers to a system of satellites and receivers that allow people and devices to pinpoint their precise location on the earth. The Global Positioning System, or GPS, can show you your exact position on Earth any time, anywhere, in any weather.
It may be useful in situations such as theft of a vehicle through GPS can locate what you are in, also for the loss or theft of a cell phone with this technology and the sites where this system is used by private insurers, in telephone mobile auto dealers in the pot for the location of the ship, in herds, etc.
    3. PDAs
What is a PDA? What can a PDA do? Can it take the place of other computer devices? Explain. List the sites you used.

APDA personal digital assistant: a lightweight consumer electronic device that looks like a hand-held computer but instead performs specific tasks; can serve as a diary or a personal database or a telephone or an alarm clock etc.
The main activity of the PDA is to collect, edit and disseminate technical information to those involved with fertiliser advice, sales or use. This is done through publications, direct mail, telephone support and computerised systems of information transfer.
Nowadays, it may be more pertinent to ask what a PDA cannot do. In addition to basic calendar, address book, and task-list programs, high-end PDAs often allow for wireless connection to the Internet (for Web browsing and e-mail), have built-in MP3 players, take digital photographs, and double as mobile telephones. Some new PDAs can even double as global positioning devices, showing users exactly where they are on a map. Most PDAs come with infrared ports that allow users to "beam" information to each other. These same infrared ports allow PDA users to connect wirelessly to a computer network if it is available.
PDAs are also usually able to exchange information with full-sized computers. For instance, you might transfer a document from your computer to your PDA so that you could work on it while on the go. The process of exchanging information between your computer and PDA is called, appropriately, "synchronizing" them.
